Whiplash Injury and the Importance of Chiropractic Care

Definition

•  A strain or sprain of soft tissue structures of the cervical spine

•  A whiplash injury may be complicated by fractures and/or dislocations

Pain

•  Neck

•  Shoulders

•  Mid-thoracic region

•  Sub-occipital regions

•  Injury to the muscle motor unit and decreased function resulting in muscle spasms

•  May be intensified by active or passive ranges of motion

Signs and Symptoms

•  Headaches

•  Numbness or tingling sensation radiating down to the extremities

•  Muscle spasm

•  Inflammation

•  Blurred vision

•  Chest pain

•  Nausea/vomiting

•  Decreased range of motion due to restriction from pain and guarding

•  Increased pain with weight bearing

•  Pain may be immediate or take several weeks following an accident

Treatments

•  Decrease muscle spasms

•  Alleviate pain to a tolerable level

•  Increase range of motion

•  Restore normal strength and stability to the ligament structures

•  Quickly change to rehabilitation and restoration of function

Chiropractic Care
